Each month as part of Digital.NYC’s Startups to Watch program we connect with the winning company to find out more about them. Here's what we learned in a recent talk with [Name], [Title] of Nora Gardner.
Digital.NYC: Tell us about your company. What does Nora Gardner do?
Nora Gardner New York is a NYC-made women's workwear brand designed to empower women. Our collection consists of dresses and separates that are perfect for professional women on the go. Our fabrics are made from high-quality materials that have a luxe look and feel, but also have high-performance features.
Digital.NYC: What is your background?
Prior to founding my company in 2013, I worked in Investment Banking for six years. I also studied draping, pattern-making, and sewing before creating my first collection.
Digital.NYC: How did you come up with the idea and why give it your own name?
When I was working in finance, I realized there was a real need for attractive, professional women's wear. There are thousands of suiting brands for men -- but none for women! At least none that made me feel good, attractive and empowered. I named the brand after myself because I do all of the design work and I design clothing that I want to wear -- it is my voice.
Digital.NYC: Who is your target customer?
A professional women in her 30s-50s who has a hectic schedule and travels often for work.
Digital.NYC: How do you think Nora Gardner is going to disrupt the market? What are the main differentiators between you and your competitors?
Our consistency in quality, fit and focus on functionality makes us stand out. Each piece I design fills at least one need -- or checks multiple boxes. For example, our travel-ready (wrinkle resistant) suiting collection, our sweat-wicking summer dresses, and our machine washable day dresses with sleeves and pockets are all examples of pieces that solve real problems women face. Moreover, all of these pieces are chic and flattering.
Digital.NYC: What else might our readers be interested to know about Nora Gardner?
We are 100% made in NYC! I also recently learned that two of my great grandmothers were dress makers -- so it seems to run in the family.
Digital.NYC: Why did you chose New York City as your base for Nora Gardner?NYC is the epicenter of fashion and the Garment District has every resource an emerging designer could need so it made sense to develop my collection here. Plus, it is my home! Read Complete Article
